Mince pies, a glass of red and a dash of perspective

I love Christmas.  This is the bit I like the most actually - the build up.

Although over the last few years, especially since I’ve been running my own business, the first few weeks of December are always turbulent - there’s the inevitable slowing of new business as people have other things on their minds, but you’re really busy trying to finish stuff off so you can enjoy “winding down” - in the last few days before the break you can’t help but go all…well, Christmassy.

There’s something about old festive films and seeing kids get excited that warms even the frostiest of cynical hearts, I think, and right now I’m sitting here, an hour to go before I go home for my own Christmas thinking about the things that really matter.

Staying positive at the moment is a bit of an effort really.  I don’t listen to the news that much as I find it all a bit depressing, but in this 24 hour “meejah” world we live in, you just can’t get away from it and frankly, if you believe everything you read and hear the “experts” say, you might as well pack up now and go and hide in a dark room.

Except you’re not going to are you?  I haven’t checked recently, but I don’t believe that the world is going to end or the sky is falling in, so why worry about it?  Worrying about things that you can’t change is the biggest single waste of time humans indulge in.

So I say don’t bother.  Go and do something else more interesting.  Have a mince pie and watch a soppy Christmas film with your missus.  Make Christmas cards with your kids.  Phone up that friend that you haven’t spoken to for ages and have a natter.  When you look back, wouldn’t it be great to feel that you’d always enjoyed your Christmas?  So why don’t you enjoy yours?

Go on, dare ye…

Merry Christmas to you all and see you in 2009.
